MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A North Miami man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly extorting a woman who he went to high school with about 10 years ago, authorities said.
According to Miami-Dade police, Elian Antonio Mejia, 24, and the victim have had little to no communication since they attended the same school -- that is until June 2024 when Mejia found the victim’s Instagram profile and reached out to her.

His arrest report states that Mejia and the victim began exchanging messages and photos, some of which were explicit in nature.
According to the report, on the morning of Sept. 6, Mejia sent the victim a direct message on Instagram threatening to share her explicit photos and messages with her boyfriend and family.
Police said the victim begged Mejia not to share her private photos or messages, and after about an hour of begging, Mejia asked her what she would be willing to do to prevent him from sharing them.
The woman told police that she asked Mejia if he was looking for money in exchange for not sharing her photos, and told him she only had $200.
Police said Mejia responded to her, “300 and me and you never met each other.”
According to the arrest report, Mejia sent the victim a Cash App request for $300 and then texted her, “I requested.”
Police said the victim complied and sent him the money.
But the woman then reported the incident to police and Mejia was located Tuesday at a probation and parole building where he was taken into custody.
Mejia allegedly provided a statement to detectives, however the statement was redacted from the publicly released report.
Mejia was arrested on charges of threats/extortion and unlawful use of a communications device.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Mejia was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where his bond had yet to be set.
