Suspect dies following police shooting in Liberty City

MIAMI – The Miami Police Department said three of their officers shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon in Liberty City after a foot pursuit and confrontation.

The incident happened in the area of 1480 NW 67th St., in the Liberty Square housing complex.

The MPD’s Tactical Robbery Unit and Crime Gun Intelligence Center were in the area conducting surveillance in connection with a shooting that occurred over the weekend, according to Miami Police Chief Manny Morales.

Detectives confirmed that the suspect, a convicted felon, fired several shots in the area Sunday, sparking an ongoing investigation into the incident.

“I know there were about ten to twelve shots that were fired, and they were caught on one of our cameras in the area,” Morales said. “As they approached the offender, a foot pursuit ensued, at which time there was a confrontation.”

Morales said officers spotted the suspect around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near 67th Street and 15th Avenue, exiting a store. During the encounter, three officers opened fire. It remains unclear if the suspect fired at police, but he was armed, according to investigators.

Authorities said the suspect later died at the hospital. His identity has not been disclosed as of Tuesday night.

“They killed my nephew,” a man, who did not want to be identified, told Local 10′s Bridgette Matter.

Video from a police-escorted transport to Jackson Memorial Hospital shows a person bleeding while paramedics performed chest compressions.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting, which is standard procedure following a police shooting.

No other details were immediately released.
