MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A deadly crash shut down a portion of the Palmetto Expressway in Miami Gardens late Friday morning into the afternoon hours.
According to MDFR dispatch records, units responded to the scene, near Northwest 15th Avenue, just after 11:30 a.m. Authorities soon shut down the eastbound lanes of the highway just west of the Golden Glades interchange.
Video from Sky 10 shows the Honda Accord sedan with side damage and a yellow tarp, along with Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Miami Gardens police officers at the scene.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver swerved to avoid debris while traveling east on the highway, lost control and collided with the tree.
The left rear passenger, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three victims were rushed to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital with serious injuries.
Troopers closed the eastbound portion of the highway beginning at the Northwest 17th Avenue exit.
It’s not yet clear when it will reopen.
