MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade County is making recommendations ahead of a new Florida law going into effect that directly impacts the homeless.

House Bill 1365 was signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year. It goes into effect on Oct. 1 and bans people from setting up camps or sleeping on public property.

Starting on Jan. 1, counties and cities could face legal action from a resident or business owner for failing to comply with the ban.

On Wednesday, commissioners in Miami-Dade voted to move forward with a plan to build housing for people who have struggled with staying of the streets.

Additionally, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust - which is also helping to build the aforementioned housing - released an extensive memo that details what the new law means, as well as recommended strategies on how to respond to the new law.
