Fort Lauderdale takes action to address gun violence after string of shootings

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale leaders took action Wednesday after a surge in gun violence left the Broward County community reeling over the summer.

A series of shootings, many still unsolved, have plagued the city’s northwest neighborhoods, prompting urgent calls for change.

“Gun violence is a public health emergency. We see it every single day in our district,” said U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democratic businesswoman who represents Florida’s 20th congressional district.

Among the tragedies highlighted at a news conference Wednesday: the fatal shooting of 3-year-old Rylo Yancy during a birthday party at Riverland Park and the injury of 2-year-old Diego Henry in a separate incident that also claimed the lives of a man and woman near Northwest 10th Terrace back in July.

“There’s been more than 11 killings and gun violence incidents in the city of Fort Lauderdale — that means 11 family members had to bury their families,” said Cherfilus-McCormick. “Eleven families had to wonder if they’re safe.”

In response, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis announced the restructuring of the city’s police force at the news conference, including the formation of a new gun intelligence center, which will intensify efforts to combat gun violence.

“The revamped unit prioritizes our fight against gun violence by combining forces and intensifying our focus,” said Trantalis.

Trantalis confirmed the new unit will deploy advanced tools, such as an expanded ShotSpotter gunfire detection system, covering more areas of the city.

Community leaders are also urging residents to break their silence and report any information that could help solve these crimes.

“We must have zero tolerance for gun violence. It’s time to stop the killing,” said Florida Sen. Rosalind Osgood, a Democrat from Fort Lauderdale.

Anyone with information on any of the cases is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477. Tipsters can remain anonymous and receive a reward of up to $5,000 for any information that leads to an arrest or arrests.
