Attorney for mother hit by Amazon driver: ‘She’s a shell of what she used to be’

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A South Florida mother pushing her infant in a stroller was hit by a car when an Amazon driver plowed right into them.

The attorney for that mother is speaking about the incident, making a call for change.

According to police, Amazon driver Sarah Naybeth Parra-Ovalles ran right into them as they were crossing the street in a crosswalk, got out of her car, put the baby back in the stroller and then left them.

The mother, who Local 10 News is not naming, now has some high-powered help.

Attorney Judd Rosen is representing her and he said she was diagnosed with a catastrophic brain injury.

“It’s heartbreaking to me, but it’s also a wakeup call because something has to change,” said Rosen. “She had a fractured skull, subdural hematoma and a brain bleed. She came home and she’s a completely different person. She’s a shell of what she used to be.”

Parra-Ovalles was ultimately arrested for leaving the scene of the accident. She is out on bond and awaiting arraignment, but Rosen says this is bigger than just her.

After the wreck in a quiet gated community in northeast Miami-Dade, it’s prompted the family to seek changes from companies like Amazon, pushing for several things to ease unnecessary traffic and tragedies.

“We know that they’re going to have to pay an exorbitant amount of money to this family, but where’s the change coming from?” said Rosen. “Let’s ask for minimum standards for delivery drivers. Why are delivery drivers not professional drivers? Visit one neighborhood, one time a day, so that way we don’t have constant influx of cars coming back in forth. They’re in our neighborhoods. They’re looking at their phones. They’re trying to find the next place.”
