Grieving mother wants truth about how her 22-year-old son died in Miami-Dade

Mother says witness video contradicts FHP account

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Annetta Garcia was grieving her 22-year-old son on Thursday at a roadside memorial in Miami-Dade County.

It has been 23 days since Alexander Jesus Moya died near the entrance ramp to Interstate 95 northbound at U.S. 441.

Garcia said she still doesn’t know how it happened.

“I know nothing is going to bring him back but I’m looking for exactly what happened,” Garcia said.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Moya fell from a scooter before the driver of a commercial vehicle struck him.

Garcia said the FHP employee who informed her about his death only told her he had fallen from his scooter.

A witness recorded a video showing Moya on the ground and the driver who had stopped after striking him.

Garcia said that when she saw the video she realized the FHP employee had lied by omission.

Garcia said she felt betrayed by the FHP employee and the driver who later left the scene.

“This is a pain that I don’t want anyone to go through,” Garcia said. “I want justice ... Why did he live him there like a dog?”

Garcia doesn’t know why her son fell off the scooter, why the driver wasn’t arrested, and the unanswered questions torture her.

“I understand accidents happen, and I forgive him, but I won’t forgive him for the fact he left him there,” Garcia said adding, “He was just special. He was my son, he was my best friend. I was his best friend. I had him at a young age, so at some point, we grew up together.”
