SUNRISE, Fla. – An 88-year-old woman has died after her vehicle crashed into a canal in Sunrise Wednesday night, authorities confirmed Thursday.

It happened in the area of the 3700 block of North Pine Island Road.

A witness told Local 10 News he saw the elderly woman who lives in a nearby apartment complex drive her car into the canal.

He said he dove in to try to help, but couldn’t get the woman out.

That man’s daughter also witnessed what happened, desperately dialing 911 as her dad ran into the water and attempted to get to the woman out.

Witnesses said the car was in the water for 10 minutes before rescue crews arrived, eventually pulling the woman from the car and taking her to the hospital.

Sunrise police confirmed Thursday morning that the victim was transported to West Side Regional Hospital, where she died.

Police said the initial investigation reveals that she “dove over the center parking block into the canal accidentally.”

The victim’s identity has not yet been released.
