Scooter driver dies after colliding with Jeep in Opa-locka

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – A man who was driving a scooter in Opa-locka early Wednesday morning has died after his scooter collided with a Jeep Wrangler, authorities confirmed.

According to Miami-Dade police Detective Argemis Colome, the crash was reported around 4:25 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and Ali Baba Avenue.

Colome said the scooter was heading north on 27th Avenue, approaching Ali Baba Avenue, when it collided with a red Jeep that was heading west on Ali Baba Avenue.

According to Colome, the victim was ejected from his scooter and pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene.

Hours later, Local 10 cameras captured a woman arriving at the scene who appeared to be very distraught.

She told reporter Trent Kelly that she went to the area looking for her 20-year-old boyfriend after she was unable to get ahold of him.

At one point, she was heard crying while speaking to someone on the phone, saying in Spanish that she could see her boyfriend’s shoes.

Detectives later walked her to the back of a police cruiser where she remained for some time.

Officers eventually allowed the driver of the Jeep to leave. but his vehicle was towed away as evidence, along with what was left of the scooter.

Authorities have not confirmed which driver was at fault. The investigation continues.
