High levels of carbon monoxide detected at Weston high school for 2nd time in less than a week

Cypress Bay (WPLG)

WESTON, Fla. – Cypress Bay High School Principal Kassandra Fried confirmed Monday that the school detected high levels of carbon monoxide for the second time in less than a week.

According to Fried, high levels of carbon monoxide were detected on Monday just before 10 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria area. The school is located at 18600 Vista Park Blvd., just north of Griffin Road.

Fried assured families in her statement Monday that the source of the carbon monoxide has been identified and is being addressed. No injuries or hospitalizations have been reported following Monday’s incident.

Monday’s incident comes just days after authorities reported that five people were hospitalized following a carbon monoxide leak on Friday.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane confirmed that five people — four school staff members and one firefighter from BSFR — were transported to Cleveland Clinic Florida Express Care in Weston following Friday’s incident.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we will continue to monitor the building closely to ensure that all areas remain safe,” she said in part.

Kane also reminded everyone that carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless, making it difficult to detect until people start feeling sick, which he said is exactly what happened in the school’s cafeteria.

Fried told parents in an email that the school had been evacuated and all students and staff members were dismissed at noon on Friday following the gas leak.

She said due to ongoing repairs, the school will not serve hot food on Monday and has arranged alternative indoor dining areas and meal options for students.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to work with district safeguards and follow all safety protocols,” she said.

Fried also encouraged anyone with questions or concerns to reach out directly by calling 754-323-0350.

Monday’s incident follows a propane leak that was reported at a Broward County elementary school earlier in the morning, which resulted in one person being taken to the hospital.
