PLANTATION, Fla. – South Florida residents are once again grappling with a growing problem: political sign theft.
Over the weekend, residents in the Jacaranda Lakes neighborhood in Plantation claim a group of individuals was caught on camera removing a sign that read “Democracy is on the ballot — vote for Kamala Harris.”
The same individuals were later seen stealing another sign from a home just a few blocks away, according to a Plantation resident.
The homeowner confronted the group and managed to recover not only their sign but also discovered other signs stuffed inside a backpack.
This issue isn’t limited to Plantation or supporters of any one political party.
Lior Weiss, a Coconut Grove resident, told Local 10 his neighborhood has experienced similar incidents, with his Trump signs being stolen twice.
“The first time lasted about a week. The second time lasted a day,” Weiss said.
Determined to catch the thief, Weiss set up a camera outside his home.
“We see in the video an individual riding a bicycle, knowing exactly where he’s going, stopping, taking the banners, not knowing that he’s being recorded,” Weiss said. “It looks like he’s moving to the next sign.”
Weiss, who moved from California and changed political parties, placed the signs in his yard to show support for his chosen candidates.
He shared frustration over the thefts, saying, “Feel free to put your own sign and support your own party, but definitely don’t break the law.”
“We are going to put the third sign up. And the fourth. And the fifth and the sixth,” Weiss added. “If anyone in the neighborhood wants to talk to us about it and why and how it affected our life, we can tell them.”
The theft of political signs is not isolated to one neighborhood or one political affiliation, and incidents have been reported across Plantation.
Police reports have been filed, and authorities are investigating several cases.
Residents, meanwhile, are left hoping for a resolution that respects both their property and their right to express their political views.
Anyone with information on this case or recent cases is urged to call their local police department.
