MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 45-year-old woman from Miami-Dade County was arrested last Friday after she took a 2-year-old girl to the hospital with severe injuries, authorities said.

According to her arrest report, Erika Maria Castro-Mairena told medical staff that the girl had fallen down three steps on Aug. 16 and injured herself.

But Miami-Dade police said medical staff determined that the victim had two fractures to her arm in two separate states of healing, was bleeding in both of her eyes and ears and had infected bruises on various parts of her face.

Medical staff advised police that the injuries did not match Castro-Mairena’s explanation about how the girl was injured.

According to her arrest report, a witness told police that Castro-Mairena was the only person caring for the victim when she was injured. The report does not state the relationship between Castro-Mairena and the victim.

Police said Castro-Mairena was transported to the Midwest station, where she invoked her right to not speak with detectives without an attorney present.

She was arrested on charges of child abuse with great bodily harm and child neglect with great bodily harm.

As of Monday afternoon, she remained held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.

The arrest report did not state who currently is caring for the victim.
