Key West man accused of attacking man holding sign displaying Bible verse

STOCK ISLAND, Fla. – A 50-year-old man from Key West was arrested Wednesday after he attacked a man who was holding a sign that displayed a Bible verse, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to MCSO spokesman Adam Linhardt, Jerome Hernandez attacked the 37-year-old victim on Maloney Avenue in Stock Island around 6:35 p.m. as the victim was holding a sign displaying the Bible verse John 3:16, which reads, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Linhardt said Hernandez punched and kicked the victim and attempted to steal his sign.

Hernandez was arrested on charges of battery, disorderly intoxication, disturbing the peace and robbery.

Linhardt said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.
