Miami police said they responded to a call of gunshots being fired inside the CoffeeZone, located near the intersection of Brickell Avenue and Southeast 11th Street around 3 a.m. on May 11.

Upon arriving at the scene, police said they discovered evidence of a violent encounter inside the café. Spent shell casings were found scattered across the floor, and the front glass door, along with several windows, had been shattered, they said.

Police quickly located the first victim, who was suffering from several lacerations to the face, which they said was likely caused by broken glass during the shooting.

According to an arrest report from the MPD, a short time later, a second victim was found at the University of Miami Hospital. She had sustained multiple lacerations to her upper and middle back, also caused by the shattered glass, they said.

After visiting a second victim at the hospital police said a woman recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the shooting, stating that she had been outside the CoffeeZone waiting for her food when three men entered the café and began firing, according to the report.

“Fearing for her life,” the victim told police she ran for cover and only later realized she had been injured, the report stated.

On May 14, just three days after the incident, detectives from the City of Miami Police Tactical Robbery Unit said they conducted a proactive patrol in the city’s Overtown neighborhood when they observed a gray 2024 BMW 530i with heavily tinted windows parked on the east side of Northwest Miami Court, just north of Northwest 20th Street.

Detectives said they initiated a traffic stop due to illegal tints on the vehicle.

During the stop, police said they removed the occupants from the vehicle for safety reasons.

As detectives approached the car, they spotted a black handgun with an extended magazine in plain sight on the rear passenger floorboard, according to the report.

Police said further inspection revealed that the gun was equipped with a machine conversion device, commonly known as a “switch,” which made the gun fully automatic.

An arrest report states Scott and Kevaris Lavon Johnson, 22, were immediately taken into custody and transported to the MPD’s Violent Crimes Unit for further investigation.

Detectives said on May 15 they obtained a search warrant for the gray BMW.

Inside the vehicle, investigators said they located a mini-Draco rifle, a fully loaded Poly 80 firearm without a visible serial number, and 22 rounds of live rifle ammunition.

Police said the Poly 80 firearm also had a machine gun conversion device attached, making it fully automatic. Additionally, detectives said they discovered several credit cards and another live rifle round inside the car.

Later that day, the second victim from the CoffeeZone shooting met with detectives at the Miami Police Department’s Violent Crimes Office.

Authorities said she told investigators that she and her friends noticed three men entering the café and began to walk away, sensing danger. Moments later, gunfire erupted, catching them off guard, according to police. The victim was unable to identify the men who entered the coffee shop.

As the investigation progressed, police shared video surveillance footage from the CoffeeZone shooting with a detective from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Gang Unit. who recognized the suspects from previous encounters, providing a crucial lead in the case.

On May 16, the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network)results revealed a match between the 9mm shell casings found at the Brickell shooting scene and the Poly 80 firearm recovered from the gray BMW, according to police. This discovery further tied the suspects to the CoffeeZone shooting, they said.

Local 10 News has requested Johnson’s arrest report, but his mug shot has not been released, and he was not listed as an inmate as of Monday afternoon.

Jail records show Smith is being held at the Metro West Detention Center, where his bond has not yet been determined.

Panorama Tower Management, which has a property near CoffeeZone, released the following statement following the incident:

We were shocked by the early Saturday morning incident at CoffeeZone, adjacent to our property. Fortunately, no one was hurt. While this is highly unusual for the area, known for its safety, we are fully cooperating with the police to ensure it remains an isolated incident. The safety and well-being of our residents, staff, and guests continue to be our highest priority.

Police said the investigation is ongoing as they work to “bring additional suspects to justice” but have not disclosed a motive at this time.

Anyone with information is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
