Miami-Dade Public Schools superintendent holds press conference ahead of new school year

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Jose Dotres held a news conference Friday morning, less than a week before students return from summer break.

Hundreds of Miami-Dade public school leaders filled the auditorium at Miami Senior High School this morning as Dotres addressed the group at his alma mater and shared his vision for the upcoming school year.

Dotres spoke about the district’s commitment to enhancing the student and parent experience, raising proficiency levels and narrowing the achievement gap.

“If you bring assistant principals, principals, and school leaders combined, 80% have graduated from local high schools,” Dotres said.

The event, which featured performances by students from across the district, aimed to energize school leaders ahead of the first day of classes.

“We will continue to focus on elevating proficiency levels to ensure our students are excelling academically,” added Dotres. “We will also double down on our efforts to narrow the achievement gap.”

School officials announced last week that MDCPS earned an “A” for the 2023-2024 school year and was ranked eighth among the state’s 67 districts, based on the number of total points earned toward the district grade.

Dotres also introduced John Pace lll as the new superintendent of Henry County Schools.

The first day of school in Miami-Dade County is next Thursday, Aug. 15.

Public school students in Broward County return to class on Monday.
