South Florida military families receive back-to-school supplies

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The United Way of Broward County is helping hundreds of students in military families get ready to return to school.

On Wednesday, the United Way of Broward County’s MISSION UNITED distributed 900 backpacks filled with school supplies to families with active military members and veterans.

The drive-thru style giveaway was held at the United Way of Broward County, located at 1300 S. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale.

According to the United Way, the backpacks were “filled with an assortment of necessary school supplies including notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, highlighters, markers, crayons, glue, folders, index cards, scissors, erasers, and more.”

Advanced registration and proof of military service were required to receive a backpack.

Per a news release, “MISSION UNITED is a community-based initiative convening and aligning public and private resources in Broward County to support U.S. military service members, Veterans, and their families by helping them acclimate to civilian life.”
