MIAMI – A 35-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after Miami police say he punched another man in the face outside a Winn-Dixie grocery store.

The incident was reported just before 9 a.m. Tuesday outside the store at 1150 NW 54th St.

According to the suspect’s arrest report, a Miami police officer was flagged down by a witness who said that he was standing in front of the grocery store when he spotted the suspect, Nathan Ulseth, of Miami, walking toward the victim and punching him in the face.

The officer separated the two and then noticed a cutting instrument on the ground, the report stated.

According to the report, Ulseth spontaneously told the officer “That fell out of my bag,” and later claimed, “They beat me up.”

Police said the victim and Ulseth are not known to each other.

The victim told police that he had just parked his car when Ulseth began walking toward him, screaming profanities at him before punching him in the mouth, causing a cut on his inner lip.

According to the arrest report, a second witness told police that he blocked Ulseth from striking the victim again and said that the victim did not do anything to Ulseth.

Surveillance video also corroborated the victim and witnesses’ statements, authorities said.

Ulseth was arrested on a charge of battery on a person 65 or older.

Police said he claimed to have pain in his left arm, so he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Room.

While in the hospital’s triage area, he began hitting his left arm on an armrest, the report stated.

A motive for the attack remains unclear.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Ulseth remained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Jail records show he was out on felony bond at the time of his arrest.
