North Miami City Hall remains closed following possible cyber attack

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – The city of North Miami remains closed Tuesday as officials deal with a possible cyber breach.

A notice now appears on the city’s website alerting visitors to the “possible breach affecting its network system.”

Local 10 News has learned their IT department was notified of the breach on Sunday.

Residents are growing more frustrated as city business is unable to be conducted.

“I cannot understand, they do not have contingency plans, they don’t have backup plans,” one resident said. “In a private company, the CEO would be fired. This is unbelievable.”

That man said he just wanted to take care of a permitting issue.

For now, though, permits, payments, billing, and even passport services that are run out of City Hall are on hold.

City Hall is essentially closed until further notice.

No one with the city has been willing to speak on camera, but Local 10 News has been told the FBI, Miami-Dade police, and North Miami police are all involved in the investigation.

There has still been no word on who is behind it, or what, if anything, is being demanded.

Officials also cannot say if residents’ personal data or city personnel data have been compromised, or if any of the city’s financial tools or bank accounts have been impacted.

Mayor Alix Desulme did say “manual” steps have been taken to safeguard payroll and that staff directors are finalizing plans to get services running to start doing some business again.

The mayor is expected to be briefed either Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday.
