NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – The city of North Miami fell victim to a cyber breach, launching an investigation into who or what is behind it.
It happened on Sunday, forcing City Hall to close on Monday with no word on when it will reopen to the public.
Resident Cesar Menendez told Local 10 News’ Layron Livingston that he tried to come in person to pay his water bill after he couldn’t pay it online, which was the first sign that something was wrong.
The city called what happened a “possible breach affecting (its) network system.”
John Lorfils, the interim deputy city manager, pulled up while Livingston was outside City Hall but claimed to be out of the loop.
“I’m actually going in right now so I can be brought up to speed,” said Lorfils.
In a statement, the city says its “Information Technology team, along with local and federal authorities, are actively investigating the extent of the breach. We are working to secure our systems and are committed to keeping the public informed.”
The city did not say whether any personal data was compromised.
Emergency response services, including the 911 call center, remain fully operational.
