The arrest report states that Mairena and the 35-year-old victim had been in a relationship for three years, but had ended their relationship two months ago.
They have no children in common, but the victim has a 10-year-old son who lives with them, police said.
According to the report, the victim told police that Mairena began arguing with her the night before over him wanting to get back together.
The woman said after the argument, she fell asleep in her bed with her son next to her, but was awakened by Mairena turning on the bedroom light.
He then walked over to her and said he was going to kill her because he didn’t want her to be with anyone else, she told detectives.
According to police, Mairena stabbed the victim in the center of her chest with a large kitchen knife.
Police said the victim screamed at her son to leave the room as she attempted to defend herself from Mairena.
According to the report, the boy ran downstairs and grabbed a knife from the kitchen.
Police said the mother tried to grab the knife from Mairena, causing her to be cut on her left hand between her thumb and index finger.
She told police that Mairena tried to continue stabbing her, but she used both of her hands and feet to push him off of her and onto the floor.
According to the report, the victim then ran downstairs where she was met by her son, who was holding the knife he had taken from the kitchen.
Police said the mother and son then exited the home through the front door, but were unable to open the locked steel iron gate.
The mother then got on top of a small table nearby and helped her son over the gate before jumping over it herself, authorities said.
Police said a witness who also lives at the home eventually came downstairs after hearing the commotion and called police.
The victim’s son told officers at the scene that he had overheard Mairena speaking on the phone to someone from Nicaragua earlier, who said in Spanish, “matala” (kill her).
According to police, the woman was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center to be treated for her injuries. It’s unclear whether she has been released from the hospital.
Police said Mairena was also hospitalized after stabbing himself in the chest and neck.
The victim’s son was unharmed, according to authorities.
Mairena was booked into jail Monday after being released from the hospital. He faces multiple charges, including attempted second-degree murder, child abuse, false imprisonment and false imprisonment of a child.
As of Tuesday afternoon, he was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. His bond had yet to be set.
