Camacho said troopers made contact with the man, who “displayed a knife towards the troopers.”

According to Camacho, troopers tried to detain the man, but he ran across the four travel lanes where he was struck by an oncoming black pickup truck.

The pedestrian was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

Camacho said two southbound lanes remained closed, as of 9:40 a.m.

The pedestrian’s identity has not yet been released and it’s unclear why he was initially walking on the highway.
