Gov. Ron DeSantis discusses Florida’s upcoming back-to-school sales tax holiday in Aventura

AVENTURA, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis held a news conference Thursday morning with Florida Department of Children and Families Secretary Shevaun Harris.

The conference was held at Mo’s Bagels & Deli in Aventura, where he previewed Florida’s upcoming back-to-school sales tax holiday.

The tax holiday, starting Monday and lasting two weeks, exempts certain items from sales tax, including learning aids and jigsaw puzzles priced at $30 or less, school supplies at $50 or less, clothing, footwear, and accessories at $100 or less, and computers and related accessories at $1,500 or less when purchased for non-commercial or personal use.

DeSantis discussed the importance of this tax relief for Florida families, noting how quickly expenses can add up, especially for parents with multiple children. He also praised state legislature for renewing this initiative to help offset rising costs over the past few years.

“This is an opportunity to be able to save real money,” DeSantis said. “It allows people to save money on the most important school supplies. Clothing, footwear and other apparel are $100 or less, tax free. Learning aids up to $30 are also tax-free.”

“I think it’s important that we’re able to provide relief for Florida families, particularly given how things have gone up so much over the last 3.5 years,” DeSantis added.

He also reiterated that there is no sales tax on any baby item in the state of Florida.

DeSantis also confirmed Miami-Dade and Broward counties received an ‘A’ rating at Thursday’s news conference.
