6-year-old remains hospitalized after losing hand in fireworks accident

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ A 6-year-old boy badly injured in a fireworks accident remains in the hospital recovering.

Local 10 News has learned that Kyrie Herman plays Little League and loves football. He is the youngest of five children.

Tensions and emotions ran high outside the familyā€™s home along Northwest First Terrace in Deerfield Beach on Tuesday.

Sky 10 was overhead as Broward Sheriffā€™s Office deputies and fire rescue crews worked the scene.

Investigators are still piecing together the details of what happened, but Local 10 News has learned Kyrie was in the backyard late Tuesday morning playing with a firework that went off in his hand.

First responders said they found the 6-year-old with a ā€œcomplete hand amputation.ā€

His father was visibly distraught, saying he rushed home from work after getting the call and that his son lost his left hand.

Kyrie was flown to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale where he underwent surgery, and family members say heā€™s stable.

The boy spent the night sedated at the hospital.

What kind of firework it was, where it came from, who, if anyone, was with him when it happened and if any charges will come of it all have yet to be revealed as the investigation continues.
