FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A former school employee in Broward County was arrested over the weekend on disturbing allegations, police announced Monday.
According to authorities, 32-year-old Rubyne Burrows was working as a school security monitor at William Dandy Middle School in Fort Lauderdale when the incident occurred on Feb. 27.
Police said it was on that date that a Fort Lauderdale police school resource officer responded to the school and was shown cellphone video taken by a student, which showed Burrows placing another student in a headlock and slamming the student into a concrete planter box.
The video also showed Burrows slapping the student in the face and applying pressure to his neck, according to his arrest report.
According to the report, the video was shared with the school’s assistant principal who reported the incident to police.
Burrows turned himself into authorities on Sunday just before midnight. He’s facing a felony charge of child abuse without great bodily harm.
Burrows appeared in court over the weekend before being released on a $10,000 bond.
Local 10 reporter Trent Kelly tracked him down at his Lauderdale Lakes home Tuesday, where he refused to comment.
It’s not the first time William Dandy Middle School has been in the news.
Back in 2019, an assistant principal at the school was reassigned after video surfaced that appeared to show the adult tackling a student who was late to class.
In 2022, a 14-year-old student was arrested after they were found to be carrying a gun on campus.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority. The District is aware of the recent arrest of a former BCPS employee. The employee in question resigned from the District in February 2024 following allegations of misconduct,” the school district said in a statement Tuesday. “Upon learning of the allegations in February, the school administration took immediate action to remove the individual away from students. The District’s Special Investigative Unit fully cooperated with local law enforcement throughout the investigation.”
