Authorities respond to sinking boat near Fort Lauderdale park

No injuries reported

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Authorities responded to reports of a sinking boat at a park in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon.

It happened around 4 p.m. near Esplanade Park at 4200 Southwest Second Street.

Greg May, a spokesperson with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, said the 54-foot Sportfish boat sank to the bottom of the water but did not impede marine traffic.

The boat was located along a city dock and no injuries have been reported at this time.

May said marine units and TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale have responded to begin the cleanup process.

The cause as to why the boat sank is being investigated at this time.

No other details were immediately released.

Editor’s note: May initially told Local 10 News the boat in question was a 70-foot Sportfish, not a 54-foot, and that the operation was conducted by SeaTow, not TowBoatU.S. Fort Lauderdale. The article has been corrected.
