Arrest made in case of Key Biscayne cyclist randomly struck by passing jogger

Andrew Cobb accused of hitting woman in face with closed fist, while holding water bottle

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – Police have made an arrest in the case of a cyclist who police said was attacked by a runner while both were exercising in Key Biscayne.

Authorities announced the arrest of 54-year-old Andrew Cobb on Monday.

Investigators say Maria Galleguillo, a triathlete, was riding her bicycle in the bike lane along the 5000 block of Crandon Boulevard, on the morning of July 7, when she saw Cobb running toward her on the same path.

As she was trying to pass him, detectives said Cobb hit her in the face with a closed fist that was holding a water bottle.

The strike caused Galleguillo, 56, to sustain serious injuries, including a large cut to her right knee and multiple scratches and road rash bruises throughout her body.

According to Cobb’s arrest report, the victim told police that she and Cobb exchanged curse words afterward until another cyclist arrived.

That cyclist told police he witnessed the incident and confronted Cobb, who told him, “You have to share the road. I’ve been hit by you guys before.”

Miami-Dade police said the witness called police and told Cobb to remain at the scene and wait for police, but Cobb fled.

According to his arrest report, the witness identified Cobb in a photo lineup.

Cobb was taken into custody on Monday. Police said he provided a recorded confession and was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

He is now facing a felony charge of aggravated battery.

As of Tuesday morning, he remained held at TGK where his bond had yet to be set.
