6-year-old loses hand in fireworks accident in Broward County

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A 6-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital Tuesday after losing his hand in a fireworks accident, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael B. Kane confirmed in an email to Local 10 News.

The accident was reported at about 10:15 a.m. in the 600 block of Northwest First Terrace in Deerfield Beach.

Kane confirmed that first responders arrived at the scene and found the boy with “a complete hand amputation after a firework exploded.”

The boy was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, Kane said.

The boy’s father, who asked to remain anonymous, told Local 10 News that his son went through two surgeries and is now stable and recovering.

Local 10′s Sanela Sabovic was outside the home where the accident occurred as investigators went in and out of the home.

Some were seen taking pictures of a towel on a chair, a white flip flop right next to it and a small black shoe.

It’s unclear whether the explosion occurred inside or outside the home.

Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said BSO’s Special Victims Unit detectives are investigating the accident.

No other injuries were reported.
