Family distraught after 18-year-old from Colombia on soccer scholarship killed in hit-and-run

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – An investigation is ongoing after a fatal hit-and-run in Miami-Dade County.

According to authorities, 18-year-old Kevin Chaparro was riding his bike early Monday morning when police say he was hit by a vehicle and left for dead.

Video from a neighbor’s home captured the crash that happened off Southwest 127th Avenue and 32nd Terrace.

Police believe the driver was in a white Jeep Wrangler.

According to family members, Chaparro was heading home after watching a soccer match when he was hit, and the driver never stopped to help.

Chaparro had just moved to South Florida from Colombia to attend Millennia Atlantic University on a soccer scholarship.

His parents spoke to Local 10 News’ Bridgette Matter from Colombia via Zoom and said he was their only child, and they were close, speaking every day.

They are trying to figure out a way to scrape money together to travel to Miami and bring Chaparro back to Colombia.

Miami-Dade detectives are hoping someone out there might recognize the Jeep and help lead them to the driver responsible.
