HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – City College, located on the second floor of 6565 Taft St. in Hollywood, became the center of confusion and frustration when Local 10 News visited Wednesday to investigate its sudden closure.
As a Local 10 News crew entered the building to inquire about the school’s closure, a man appeared and demanded that reporter Layron Livingston leave the property, threatening to call the authorities. He eventually made the call, but no arrests were made.
Diana Ruiz, a student in the Radiology Tech program at City College’s Hollywood campus, shared her concerns.
“We just want answers,” Ruiz said.
The college, which opened in 2011 to offer healthcare career training, sent an email to students on Monday announcing it would “cease enrollment and teach-out its existing programs.”
The email stated that City College anticipates staying open for the Fall and Winter terms to allow students close to graduating to finish their programs.
It also requested patience as the college worked to finalize the best plans for each student, assuring that classes would continue as scheduled.
However, no classes were in session when Local 10 News arrived at the Hollywood campus Wednesday.
“We still don’t know if this is going to be worth it or not,” Ruiz said. “If our credits are going to transfer out, then yeah, we’ll continue. But if not, what’s the point if we’re going to have to start all over again?”
Faculty termination letters have also been issued, informing staff of their final paycheck dates.
Ruiz, who enrolled in 2023 and has already spent around $12,000 on her education, feels the situation is increasingly dire.
“How are you going to help the students if you say you’re for the students?” she asked.
Despite multiple attempts to reach out to the college, none of Local 10 News’ emails or messages have been answered.
Ironically, City College’s Instagram account celebrated its latest batch of graduates early Wednesday morning.
