MIAMI – A witness recorded a video showing when a cargo ship sideswiped a barrier attached to a bridge in Miami connecting the Brickell neighborhood with downtown.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the incident occurred early Tuesday afternoon “when the tug-assisted vessel Sara Regina (collided) with the Brickell Avenue Bridge fendering system.”
The collision prompted the Florida Department of Transportation to announce that the “fender system” had worked as expected and the bridge over the Miami River was safe after an inspection.
No one was injured. An FDOT bridge inspection team responded after a witness shared the video of the cargo ship. It’s unclear if the ship operator will face a citation.
