FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Authorities in Broward County rushed to the scene of a fatal drive-by shooting that occurred on Monday night.
It happened just before 8 p.m. near the 800 block of Northwest 10th Terrace in Fort Lauderdale.
According to police, a total of five people were shot, including a child.
The child’s relatives told Local 10 News that the boy is 2 years old. They said the child was with his mother when a gunman sprayed the area outside of a convenience store. The mother was shot in the head and the boy was also struck by a bullet, they said.
According to relatives, the mother ran into the store where she collapsed and died.
Police confirmed a woman died at the scene and a man died at Broward Health Medical Center.
The surviving victims were also rushed to a Broward Health Medical Center for treatment, police said.
According to the child’s grandmother, the toddler, who she identified as Diego, is in a medically-induced coma and also has a broken leg.
She identified her daughter who was killed as 28-year-old Tiarra Holliday.
“She did everything she could to save her baby’s life,” said Shontrelle Holliday, the victim’s mother. “That was definitely the person who she was. She would have preferred to save him over her.”
Also killed in the shooting was 45-year-old Sheldon Lawrence, who was identified by his ex-girlfriend.
The couple dated for 10 years and the woman, who asked only to be identified by her first name, said the two remained good friends.
“An innocent person just at the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Devon, Lawrence’s ex-girlfriend. “All I know is he’s a good person, a good man, a good father, a good brother. He had a heart of gold.”
Police confirmed that no suspects are in custody.
“We need information to help us put the pieces together regarding this investigation,” Fort Lauderdale spokeswoman Casey Liening said. “We know there were many people on scene who witnessed this -- someone who may have seen the color of the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle, the type of gun -- I mean, you name it. We need those people to come forward.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
