Man drove 90 mph under influence of THC, oxycodone in fatal Fort Lauderdale crash, cops say

Cedric Camper (BSO)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man imprisoned in Texas for fleeing police was brought back to South Florida Tuesday to face charges in a crash where he’s accused of killing someone after trying to speed away from Fort Lauderdale police.

The Fort Lauderdale crash happened just before midnight on Jan. 26, 2022. Records show that less than six months later, Cedric Cornelius Camper Jr. would be arrested in Galveston County, Texas — and later imprisoned in the Lone Star State — on a charge of evading an arrest with a vehicle.

Camper, 26, had a projected release date from a Brownwood, Texas prison on Nov. 7, but as of Tuesday, he was in the Broward Main Jail.

According to an arrest report, Camper was 24 and living in Fort Lauderdale when an officer tried to pull him over as he drove a 2017 BMW 330i on West Sunrise Boulevard. Camper had two passengers with him at the time.

Police said a pair of officers tried to pull Camper over but he sped away from them. The report states that officers turned their lights off and did not pursue, but Camper kept on going, eventually reaching 90 mph as officers witnessed him blow through a red light at Northwest 15th Avenue, hitting a driver from Coral Springs.

Camper’s BMW then struck a utility pole and burst into flames.

Camper would be seriously hurt and two others would be hurt as well, police said. The report states that one of the victims died of “multiple blunt force injuries.”

Names of the victims were redacted from the report, so it’s unclear whether the deceased victim was Camper’s passenger or the other driver.

Police said a toxicology report would later reveal that Camper had multiple THC metabolites in his system as well as oxycodone.

He also didn’t have a valid driver’s license at the time. Police said his Florida license was revoked on April 3, 2019.

Camper now faces several serious charges, including counts of vehicular homicide and aggravated fleeing and eluding.

Jail records show he’s behind bars on a $475,000 bond and a Department of Corrections hold.
