TAMARAC, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit released several surveillance videos Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a man last week that occurred before a two-vehicle crash that resulted in one of the SUVs crashing into a cement fence in Tamarac.
Investigators are now seeking the public’s help in identifying the individuals involved.
According to BSO, deputies responded to reports of a vehicle crash and gunshots near the 6300 block of West Commercial Boulevard just after 2:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Surveillance video captured the sounds of more than 20 shots being fired as two cars sped side by side, heading westbound on Commercial Boulevard.
The chase ended with a dramatic crash into a concrete wall.
The impact was so intense that a portion of the wall crumbled into a resident’s backyard, shaking the neighborhood.
Upon arrival, detectives said they found Christopher Mathurin Jr. dead inside one of the vehicles. Preliminary investigations indicate a shooting occurred, followed by a crash involving two vehicles. The occupants of the second vehicle fled the scene, according to investigators.
Local 10 News spoke with neighbors last week who went outside to see the damage firsthand just moments after the incident occurred.
“It was a really loud bang -- it just shook the house,” said Genie Stone, who lives nearby. “I saw a bunch of police cars blocked off by Woodland. And then on the other side, it was a whole bunch of cop cars blocked off on 64th Avenue.”
Authorities said the surveillance footage shows multiple angles of the crash and captures two culprits fleeing the scene. They described the individuals as two males, one with a slim build and the other with a stocky build. Both were wearing dark clothing.
The SUVs involved in the crash were eventually towed away.
