MIAMI – An Arab-speaking man who Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Christine Bandín referred to as a “Sultan” appeared in bond court on Saturday accused of domestic violence.
Bandín told the suspect that he was facing a battery charge, and with the help of an Arab-English court interpreter, he told her that he and the victim were tourists from Dubai.

“We are leaving in two days back home,” the suspect told the judge in court.
The suspect described the case as a “misinterpretation” of the facts because the conflict “was not physical” — but “just an argument.” Bandín said the arrest affidavit claimed otherwise.
“I have read the arrest affidavit and found probable cause for the charge,” Bandín said.
The prosecution asked for the standard bond, so Bandín set his bond at $1,000. The defendant asked if he could travel back home after paying the bond.
Bandín had ordered him not to come within 500 feet of the victim.
“You cannot contact her for any reason whatsoever, including anything related to your child,” Bandín said. “Do you understand me?”
The man responded in the affirmative.
