Investigators locate boat of interest after spearfisherman killed in Florida Keys

Officials with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are seeking information after a boater struck and killed a spearfisherman in the Florida Keys early Friday afternoon. (MCSO)

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Officials with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said they located a vessel of interest after putting out a plea for information in a boat crash that left a spearfisherman dead in the Florida Keys early Friday afternoon.

According to MCSO, the boater struck and killed the spearfisherman at around 1:15 p.m. in the waters near mile marker 39 on the Overseas Highway, near Ohio and Missouri keys.

Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, but said he was an adult.

An MCSO news release described the boat of interest as a “32-foot Contender with a white T-top, white hull, and blue paint on the bottom, with twin, white, Mercury outboard engines.”

The sheriff’s office also released a photo of the boat of interest after putting out a request for information.

MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said just after 6:30 p.m. Friday that investigators located the vessel.

Officials haven’t yet said whether they’ve also found the operator or if any charges may be pending.
