Off-duty BSO deputy killed in motorcycle crash

SUNRISE, Fla. – An off-duty Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy was killed in a motorcycle crash on Thursday in Sunrise.

Scattered car parts and debris littered Pine Island Road just north of Northwest 44th Street after the severe crash left two people with injuries and one man dead.

Authorities said the fatal crash happened at approximately 12:19 p.m.

According to witnesses, the motorcyclist crashed into a car attempting to make a turn onto Springtree Lakes Drive.

The two women in that vehicle - a mother and her adult daughter – were rushed to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries while the man on that motorcycle lost his life despite first responders who tried to save his life.

Relatives identified the victim as 27-year-old Anthony Zahorovsky, a deputy with the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Memorial placed:

Family members said Zahorovsky said he was a father of a little boy and that his wife is expecting their second child.

“He was family-oriented, a good father,” said Catherine Ruiz, the victim’s cousin. “He was always there for all of us. I was going to see him in the next few hours. We were going to hang out for the Fourth of July and he was on his way to get supplies.”

The Broward Deputy Sheriffs Association, the union who represents deputies, learned of the tragedy and released a statement which read, in part:

“During this difficult time, we extend our heartfelt condolences, thoughts, prayers and unwavering support to Anthony’s family. May they find strength in the memories of Anthony’s life and positive impact he had on those around him.”

A police escort followed Zahorovsky’s body as it was taken to the medical examiner’s office.

Zahorovsky’s loved ones have created a GoFundMe account to help his family with funeral expenses. Click here for more information on how you can contribute.
