WEST MIAMI, Fla. – A man is recovering after shooting himself in the groin in front of his girlfriend outside of a West Miami apartment complex on Thursday.
According to police, he was trying to kill her ex-boyfriend.
It happened just before 3 p.m. in the area of Southwest 63rd Avenue and Ninth Street, outside of the Alameda West apartment complex.
Police said the man shot twice at his girlfriend’s ex on the sidewalk, missed and put his gun away before it discharged in his pocket.
West Miami police said it’s an unusual occurrence in the small city of a little more than 7,000, nestled between Miami and Coral Gables.
“This is very rare,” Pete Delgado, the city’s acting police chief, said. “This is probably the first actual shooting we’ve had here in over 12 years.”
The man is expected to be OK.
Police said once he gets out of the hospital, he’ll be arrested on an attempted murder charge.
