Man shot before 2 SUVs collide, sending 1 into cement fence in Tamarac

TAMARAC, Fla. – A man was shot early Wednesday morning before a two-vehicle crash that resulted in one of the SUVs crashing into a cement fence in Tamarac, authorities confirmed.

According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Claudinne Caro, the shooting and crash were reported shortly after 2:16 a.m. near the 6300 block of West Commercial Boulevard.

She said deputies arrived at the scene and found a man dead inside one of the vehicles.

The victim has since been identified as Christopher Mathurin.

According to Caro, detectives learned that a shooting occurred and two vehicles collided, but the occupants of one of the vehicles fled the scene.

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene as a tarp covered the passenger side and windshield of the SUV the victim was in.

The other SUV with front-end damage was abandoned at the scene. A large hole could be seen in the cement fence.

“It was a really loud bang -- it just shook the house,” Genie Stone, who lives nearby, said.

Some neighbors went outside to see the damage firsthand.

“I actually drove out of the community, heading west on Commercial to the right,” Stone said. “I saw a bunch of police cars blocked off by Woodland. And then on the other side, it was a whole bunch of cop cars blocked off on 64th Avenue.”

Traffic was closed off during the investigation.

The SUVs were eventually towed away.

Caro said the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
