MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A southwest Miami-Dade man is facing five felony charges, including two counts of attempted murder, after police said he opened fire on his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend.

According to an arrest report, the suspected gunman, convicted felon Steven Alexander Williams, apparently missed his targets. However, police said the woman’s new boyfriend didn’t: He shot back in self-defense, hitting Williams in the leg.

Miami-Dade police said the gunfight broke out just after 1 a.m. Sunday in the 14000 block of Southwest 281st Terrace in the county’s Leisure City area.

The arrest report states that Williams drove by his ex-girlfriend’s home, flipped a U-turn to face the house and got into a “verbal dispute” with his ex and her new boyfriend after getting out of his car.

Williams had lived with the woman for five years, police said. According to Florida Department of Corrections records, the 57-year-old spent nearly eight years in prison after 1990 convictions for aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a weapon and threatening to use a firearm.

The report states that the woman saw Williams walk behind his car, open the trunk, pull out a gun and open fire on her and her boyfriend.

Police said she took cover as her boyfriend took out his own gun and fired back at Williams.

Williams’ gunshots struck a home where three people were inside sleeping, the report states.

The report states that Williams fled and police apprehended him after a traffic stop. He was taken to Jackson South Medical Center to be treated for his gunshot wound and was later taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Monday.

Police said Williams admitted to being at the scene but claimed he never fired a gun.

In addition to the two attempted murder charges, Williams was being held in TGK on three counts of shooting or throwing a deadly missile.

His bond was listed in jail records as “to be set.”
