Probe continues after firefighter’s relative dies during training in Virginia Gardens

Authorities still haven’t said why Fabian Camero, 28, was present

VIRGINIA GARDENS, Fla. – Police and state fire investigators continued their probe Monday into the death of a 28-year-old man severely injured during a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue training exercise in Virginia Gardens on Friday morning.

Family members identified him over the weekend as Fabian Camero. According to investigators, Camero did not work for MDFR, but was instead a relative of one of the agency’s instructors, Francisco Camero.

Authorities haven’t yet said what he was doing at the training, which took place at a building at 6596 NW 36th St., near the Miami International Airport.

MDFR was conducting the training with international firefighters.

Camero worked for a private ambulance company, but his death was unrelated to his employment there.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Chief of Public Safety James Reyes released statements on Sunday, saying they were saddened to learn about the “accident” during training.

“I have asked our Chief of Public Safety to lead a full investigation into the events that took place,” Levine Cava said in the statement, adding that there was also an ongoing comprehensive review of protocols and practices “to ensure we do everything possible to prevent an incident like this in the future.”

Local 10 News contacted Miami-Dade police to find out more about what Camero was doing at the training; a spokesperson said that it is all part of the agency’s investigation.
