‘It’s been a blessing’: Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius ‘Iggy’ Carroll retires after 35 years

MIAMI – Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius “Iggy” Carroll Jr. is retiring after 35 years on the job, marking the end of an era for the city’s fire department.

“How can I replace him? He’s irreplaceable,” said MFR Chief Robert Hevia.

Carroll, a veteran firefighter and the longtime face of MFR, has also served as the public information officer for decades.

He has been a crucial source of information at some of the most critical scenes in South Florida and beyond as a member of the Urban Search and Rescue Florida Taskforce 2 team.

“His talent is immense, his heart is huge and congratulations to my very good friend,” said a man who attended the event.

Surrounded by colleagues, media members, and family, Carroll was honored at a celebratory dinner on Thursday night at the place he calls home. The event was filled with plaques, praises, and gifts, including recognition from the Miami Heat.

“One of our most important dates next year is when we honor you at a game,” said Miami Heat Vice President Steve Stowe.

While reflecting on his career, Carroll said, “Starting at 16 then getting hired at 19, it’s been a blessing and a blessing to be able to do 35 years so I’m overwhelmed.”

As for why he chose to retire now, Carroll said, “A lot of the relationships that I’ve fostered here I’m gonna miss, but I’m not going anywhere. So it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later.”
