Caught on camera: Would-be robber tries to smash way into Venetian Islands home

MIAMI – A Venetian Islands homeowner checking his cameras to see if a package had been delivered made a shocking discovery: A suspect shattering his window, apparently trying to break in.

The homeowner, who didn’t want to reveal his identity, spoke to Local 10 News on Friday in hopes that someone can help Miami police identify and catch the vandal.

It happened just after 9 p.m. Thursday.

The video shows the suspect walk up the driveway carrying an object and once at the door, the suspect hurls it multiple times at the glass, at one point attempting to kick out the window.

When that doesn’t work, the suspect uses what appears to be the tool’s handle to smash through the glass.

“I felt a rage when I saw the video and I could just imagine if either myself or one of my family members ran into someone in that condition trying to harm our property,” the homeowner said. “It would’ve been really bad.”

Thankfully, no one was home at the time. The vandal racked up an estimated $5,000 in damages.

“The glass can be replaced,” the homeowner said. “What I’m most concerned about is safety and security.”

It’s not clear who the vandal is or why he or she decided to hit up the victim’s home in the island neighborhood.

“This is a family-oriented community,” the homeowner said. “I think we need to take additional measures.”

The homeowner filed a report with the Miami Police Department; anyone with information is asked to contact that agency.
