Police arrest crook accused of swiping expensive sportswear from Miami Beach Nike shop

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. ā€“ A brazen heist at the Nike store in Miami Beach saw a crook swipe some expensive merchandise.

It happened on Tuesday just after 1 p.m. at the Nike store on Lincoln Road.

According to police, 44-year-old Michael Hawkins walked into the store, grabbed several jackets valued at $145 each off a clothing rack and ran out of the store without paying.

While he took off before police arrived, officers were able to track him down to a community near 15th Street and Michigan Avenue.

Itā€™s there a resident told Local 10 Newsā€™ Roy Ramos that Hawkins jumped her fence and was then seen on her surveillance cameras hiding in her laundry room.

Cellphone video obtained by Local 10 shows the moments officers arrived.

ā€œYouā€™ve always got to be weary of people like that because if they are not thinking about the consequences, what if I ran into that individual,ā€ said shopper Elias Mitchell.

Police said Hawkins fled from that home as well but they were able to catch up to him near Lenox Road and Michigan Avenue, where he was hiding in bushes and ultimately arrested.

Hawkinsā€™ criminal history showed that he has prior convictions of retail theft and drug possession. He also has a hold for an out-of-state warrant for his arrest.

He now remains behind bars being held with no bond.
