OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – Police arrested a Miami man on a second-degree murder charge early Tuesday morning after they said he shot and killed a delivery driver in Opa-locka earlier in the month.

The victim, identified by Miami-Dade police as 40-year-old Alejandro Linares, was delivering groceries at the Mirage at Sailboat Cove apartments, located in the 1700 block of Northwest 142nd Lane, on the morning of June 8 when he was murdered; a woman told Local 10 News that he was delivering her son’s graduation gift from Walmart.

Authorities said the gunman was Dawayen Anton Bendross, 22, of Liberty City.

Police said Bendross approached Linares as he exited his vehicle, pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest. Medics took Linares to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

An arrest report states that CCTV cameras captured the killing and that authorities found a .45 caliber casing at the scene. Police didn’t outline a motive, however.

Authorities said on Monday that Opa-locka police responded to the complex after receiving a report that a person matching the description of the shooter was seen in the area.

Opa-locka officers detained him and found a Glock .45 pistol matching the casing discovered at the scene, the arrest report states. Additionally, police said a witness identified Bendross as the man on a “need to identify” flyer related to the killing.

Miami-Dade police, who are investigating the murder case, took Bendross to the agency’s homicide bureau office in Doral for questioning; he declined to speak with detectives.

The report states that police officially arrested Bendross just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Bendross was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center just before 4 a.m. and was being held without bond there as of Tuesday afternoon.
