‘We need to get out’: Severe flooding in Hollywood leaves many residents concerned

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Hollywood residents are picking up the pieces just one day after torrential rain flooded multiple neighborhoods in the area.

Despite witnessing some areas experiencing receding water levels, the situation remains dire in eastern Hollywood, specifically at the intersection of Liberty Street and North 14th Court.

With cleanup efforts becoming an all too familiar routine, this marks the fourth occurrence of flooding within the past three years for residents in the area.

Hollywood resident Samantha Fischetti says Mother Nature has inadvertently made her an expert on flooding, which was evident by the water line visible on the exterior of her residence.

Despite the city of Hollywood currently operating five water pumps in the vicinity, Fischetti said she saw the water levels begin to rise inside her home once more.

“I stopped lifting things and told her to grab a bag. We have to get out,” she said.

Fischetti, who has a 3-year-old son with cerebral palsy, told Local 10 News that within a mere 20 minutes, the water ascended significantly, forcing her to evacuate.

Despite seeking refuge in a hotel overnight with her son, returning home unveiled yet another foot of water inundating her property.

The relentless nature of these recurrent floods has led Fischetti to contemplate leaving for good, also caused by the unexpected passing of her husband earlier this year.

The city of Hollywood currently has five pumps running in the area.

The severity of the situation has reached a point where her insurance company no longer provides content insurance leaving her in a difficult position.

“I keep telling the city of Hollywood it can’t continue to happen,” said Fischetti.

On 14the court, Hollywood resident Tom Lankston was vacuuming the water out of his car...again.

“The last time it was four inches of water through the hour, this time only two.

Caterina Gatti was one of many who had no choice but to abandon her stalled out vehicle and flee the scene.

“I was on the way home from work and all the cars were stopped..then did mine,” Gatti said.

Sky 10 flew over the scene where numerous streets in eastern Hollywood were submerged.

Joann Hussey, a spokesperson with the city of Hollywood, told Local 10 News that efforts to mitigate the crisis are ongoing as multiple stationary pumping stations and approximately 14 portable pumps are currently deployed.

Hussey said an additional request for five more pumps is pending delivery to bolster the response efforts.

Utility crews are actively surveying the area for damages with anticipation for another day of heavy rain and flooding in the area.
