MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach city commissioners want the U.S. Coast Guard to significantly reduce openings at a busy drawbridge in order to reduce congestion, according to a new report.
According to Miami Today, commissioners are asking city administrators to work with the office of U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Florida, to modify the 63rd Street Bridge schedule from opening on the hour and half hour to only opening on the hour, cutting openings in half.

The bridge crosses over Indian Creek and connects La Gorce and Allison islands with Mid-Beach and North Beach.
Miami Today reported Tuesday that Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, who called the process “arduous,” put forth the proposal and Commissioner Tanya Katzoff Bhatt offered support.
“There is not a chance that moving your yacht or your party boat takes precedence over getting to work on time or making it to a doctor’s appointment or getting to school,” the publication quotes Bhatt as saying. “In order to have that conversation with the Coast Guard, you can’t just pick up the phone and say, ‘Hey, this is ridiculous, do something.’ We need to go with data.”
Rosen Gonzalez said a meeting is planned with the Coast Guard, Miami Today reports.
