Man fatally shot in the chest while trying to deliver package in Opa-locka

Police: Murder suspect detained after search

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – A mother said she ordered a gift for her son’s graduation from Walmart and the man who was attempting to deliver it on Saturday morning was shot in the chest in Opa-locka.

According to Detective Angel Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, there was a shooting shortly before 8:30 a.m., along Northwest 142 Lane near 17 Avenue.

“We heard pops. We didn’t know what it was,” the mother said adding she found a man named Oscar bleeding outside of her home. “I applied the towels to his chest, and I was trying to assist him and keep him up and awake until the police got here.”

Opa-locka residents awoke suddenly to a police search involving SWAT armored trucks, a helicopter, and police dogs. Mirage at Sailboat Cove residents, at 14301 NW 17 Ave., said they couldn’t leave their homes for hours.

Opa-locka police officers responded first and found the man who had been shot. According to Rodriguez, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel rushed him to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital.

“Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries,” Rodriguez wrote. “A perimeter was established.”

According to Rodriguez, police officers detained a murder suspect while Miami-Dade detectives were investigating the homicide.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
