According to BSO spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis, detectives with the agency’s V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) unit were surveilling a “reckless driver” when the vehicle got onto I-95.
She said the driver was speeding on the highway as detectives tried to pull over the driver.
According to St. Louis, the driver eventually struck a parked vehicle that was disabled on the highway and then bailed out of the vehicle, running across several lanes of the highway.
St. Louis said detectives in the unmarked truck attempted to stop the suspect, but were struck by a passing vehicle, which caused the truck to flip on its side.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue personnel responded to the scene and the driver in the vehicle that struck the BSO truck was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
The detectives were not injured in the crash.
St. Louis said a perimeter was established as detectives and Fort Lauderdale police officers searched the area for the suspect.
Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was found and arrested.
He was identified by BSO as 25-year-old Anthony Williams.
Williams faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, resisting without violence and violation of probation.
According to detectives, Williams is currently on probation with an ankle monitor for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed firearm during the commission of a felony and driving while license suspended/habitual traffic offender.
