Man faces attempted murder charges after trying to set girlfriend on fire, deputies say

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – A man from Broward County now faces attempted murder charges after deputies said he allegedly tried to light his now-ex-girlfriend on fire as she was holding her child earlier this month.

Jail records show Mark Confessore, 40, now faces several felony charges, including two counts of attempted murder, in addition to previous charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated domestic assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse without great body harm and battery in connection with the May 1 incident.

He is also facing an additional charge of false imprisonment of a minor and tampering with evidence.

Broward County deputies said the pair had been arguing and decided they needed a separation when things took a violent and almost deadly turn.

Confessore is accused of dousing his girlfriend with lighter fluid.

“I’ll light you the f--- up right now,” he allegedly says in a recording obtained by Local 10 News.

The victim, who asked not to be identified, spoke with Local 10 News earlier this month, saying she screamed for him to stop.

“He was with a cigarette in his hand and the lighter… he started to do the lighter...my son came and pushed him,” she said. “He started to take that liquid again and he came back and started to do it to my face.”

The woman said that’s when Confessore retrieved and started to load bullets. Her 17-year-old son once again stepped up to defend his mother and siblings.

“Yes, we argued, but this doesn’t mean you have to kill me,” the woman said.

The victim said she and her three kids now need financial assistance. They’ve created a GoFundMe page.

As of Thursday, Confessore was being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
