Police swarm Opa-locka apartment complex after stray bullet hits car

Teen injured by glass fragments, police say

OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – Miami-Dade and Opa-locka police, as well as the Florida Highway Patrol, swarmed an apartment complex in search of a shooting suspect Monday afternoon.

Opa-locka police said it began as an altercation inside an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Sharazad Boulevard that escalated into gunfire.

At least one of “several” rounds struck a vehicle headed north on Northwest 27th Avenue; glass fragments injured a 15-year-old boy, police said.

The teen victim sustained minor injuries from the glass, according to police.

“It is believed that the victim was not the intended target of the shooting,” police said in a news release Monday evening.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medics were at the scene. A spokesperson said the agency had not transported anyone from the scene.

Heavily-armed enforcement personnel were later seen at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Kalandar Street.

The suspected shooter was at the complex, police said.

“Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the community while conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” police said. “Residents in the vicinity are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately.”
